Blog Post Assignment #6

What do you learn from these conversations with Anthony Capps?

In the Project Based Learning Part 1 video, I learned several things about Project Based Learning from the interview with Anthony Capps. Capps started by stating that Project Based Learning is used to help get the students to learn something. The goal of a project is to have an authentic audience, student interest, involve the community, and that it is driven by content. Lastly, I learned that the most crucial part of Project Based Learning is for the students to revise and reflect on their work. In Project Based Learning Part 2 video it was stated to never limit your students by giving them exactly what you want them to do. Overall, from these two videos I learned that with Project Based Learning you are a learner and not taught to just "burp back" what you are taught.

iCurio is a tool online that allows students to safely search online media that have been pulled and filtered for educational usage according to Anthony Capps. This online tool allows students and teachers to store content that they find valuable. It also allows students to get practice organizing themselves online. Capps states that it is the best online search tool for students in all grades. I believe I will consider using this search tool when I become an educator.

Another tool Anthony Capps discussed was Discovery Education. This online tool helps students learn more about the class lesson by providing videos about the subject. It is used for student searches and the teachers use it to bring the lesson to life. I agree with Capps stating that visuals help students learn more. I have experienced remembering information by watching a video or seeing a picture so I believe it is important to use visuals while teaching.

After watching The Anthony- Strange List of Tips for Teachers Part 1 I learned some teaching tips that will be useful for me in the future. The first tip was to be interested and willing to learn as an educator. Teaching is hard work but can be exciting and is very rewarding. Another tip is to be creative and get the students motivated to want to learn. The most important tip I believe I learned from this video is to attempt to have 100 percent engagement from the students. No child should be left behind and a teacher should work to get every student excited about learning something in class. It is also important that the students reflect on their work so that they can learn from their mistakes.

In the video Don't Teach Tech- Use it, Anthony Capps states that teachers should not teach technology. Teachers should instead incorporate technology into their lesson plan in order for the students to learn how to use the technology they want them to know how to use. By doing this, it gets the students use to having to learn how to work new technology. Teachers should let technology get students excited about what they are doing. They should also let technology be a way for students to share what they are doing and most importantly the teacher should not expect perfection.

In Anthony Capps last interview video Additional Thought About Lessons I learned about the layers of a lesson. A lesson should be at least four layers thick with different purposes. The four layers are: year, unit size, week, and daily. These layers are broken down into these categories so that the teacher will know how the lesson will be planned out through the year, unit, week, and on a daily basis. Overall, I learned a lot from Anthony Capps by watching his videos with Dr. Strange. His tips and ideas will really help me when I become an educator.

A Personal Learning Network (PLN) is a network used in order to help you continue to learn. With a Personal Learning Network you can connect with others through the internet and share or receive information about topics you are interested in. A Personal Learning Network can be very helpful for me as a future educator. This type of network is a way in which teachers can continue to learn new methods of teaching. Teachers can be up to date on new technologies that can be used to teach in the classroom. They can also communicate with other teachers to get some ideas from them and also share new ideas with them. Personal Learning Networks are formed by first identifying what interests you. For example, you can create a Twitter account to start your Personal Learning Network. On Twitter you are able to follow and search for people and organizations that interest you, which is the main idea of a Personal Learning Network. Before doing some research on Personal Learning Networks I had no idea that I had already began creating my own. I am currently using Twitter, Facebook, Google Docs, and Blogger. I hope that with this EDM 310 class I will develop a larger Personal Learning Network so that my learning will continue to increase.

Project #4- C4T #1

The blog I have been assigned is Learning is Messy by Brian Crosby. Brian Crosby is an elementary teacher who now focuses on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education for teachers. In Crosby's post The STEM Missile (really MSTL), he discusses the Mobile STEM Technology Lab. These labs are used in order for Brian Crosby to teach educators how to integrate technology into learning. He states that educators were trained on applications such as Twitter, blogs, and more. My question for him in my comment was what other applications were used during the training sessions. I stated that the applications he is using to train educators to use, are the same applications we are learning to use in EDM 310. I like Crosby's idea of STEM education and I believe it is very important to have this education in schools.

The second post I read by Brian Crosby was Take a Virtual Field Trip to the Deserts and Grasslands of Africa. In this post, Crosby is encouraging teachers to get involved with the online world of learning. He provides links for a virtual field trip to the Grasslands of Africa where the students will learn how people and nature can learn together. Crosby states that this is the first series that will be offered and I believe this is a great idea for learning and incorporating technology into learning. In my comment to Brian Crosby I stated how this would be a good idea for teachers to share this series with their students. I also asked him when would the next series be shown for students.

Project #15- Search Engines

1. WolframAlpha- On the WolframAlpha website it states to enter what you want to know or calculate. I believe this search engine would be most useful for statistics information and calculations. I would rate this website useful if you want more information about a company or information about another website.

2. Bing- Bing is used by typing into the search box. There are options such as images, videos, maps, and news where you can click to search through these sources. This search engine could be used to search for any type of information and can be compared to Google. I use this website often when searching the internet for information.

3. Ask- On the Ask homepage there is a Question of the Day and Previous Questions of the Day section. There is also a Q&A Community tab where you can browse and ask questions on the website. To ask a question users should type in the Ask box and click "Find Answers." Although this search engine has Images and News tabs, it would be best used for asking questions.

4. Yahoo- Yahoo is a search engine that I personally use myself. It can be used for mail, news, music, weather, sports, and other things. To search on Yahoo, click in the box next to the Yahoo logo, type and click search web. I believe this search engine would be most useful for mail but also searching the web. Yahoo is an overall great search engine to use.

5. AOL- AOL is a search engine that can be used for information, mail, weather, and entertainment news. It is used by typing in the box next to the AOL logo and clicking search. It seems to be a website that focuses on news, sports, and weather but can also be used for videos and chatting. I used this website mostly when I first started using a computer over a decade ago. I would still use this website for information I want to search for on the internet.

6. DuckDuckGo- On DuckDuckGo's homepage it states their slogan, "The search engine that doesn't track you." This website gives you the option to take a tour of the website and also offers you a lot of privacy. This search engine would be good to find out any type of information. It would also be good to use if you want privacy and do not want to be tracked. This is my first time hearing about this website but I would use it in the future.

7. MyWebSearch- MyWebSearch is a search engine powered by Google. It is used by typing into the search box what you want to find. This website provides quick links to popular websites that users may use. When searching on MyWebSearch the layout is very similar to Google such as the Web, Images, and News tabs. After viewing this website I will most likely use this search engine again for different types of information seeing that it can be used for anything.

8. InfoSpace- InfoSpace is a search engine that uses other search engines to help them find information. I believe this website would be best used if the user wants information from several different search engines. InfroSpace seems like a good website to use for searching any type of information needed.

Blog Post Assignment #4

What do we need to know about asking questions to be an effective teacher?
As future educators, there are several things we need to know about asking questions to be an effective teacher. The post The Right Way to Ask Questions in the Classroom on the website Edutopia gives more insight on this topic. According to the author Ben Johnson, when questioning students teachers should ask specific questions to appropriately check the students understanding. Students should not be asked "Does everyone understand?" because although students will answer yes, they may be responding with the answer they think the teacher wants to hear. The students also may not realize they do not understand. The best way to ask a question and get all of the students involved is to use Mary Budd Rowe's strategy. Her strategy is for teachers to ask a question and wait a couple seconds then call a students name. This way all of the students are thinking of answers and prepared to participate in the discussion. The post Asking Questions to Improve Learning by The Teaching Center website suggests using some of the same strategies as Ben Johnson. The Teaching Center states that teachers should keep in mind what their course goals are when asking questions. It also states that "yes or no" questions should be followed by asking the student for an explanation. I agree with both of these post. As a student, when sometimes asked by teachers "Do you understand?" I have often replied yes although I may not have fully understood the lesson. I think that it is a good idea for teachers to use Mary Budd Rowe's strategy because then students would attempt to participate in class more. I believe that it would make students pay attention to the lesson because they would know afterwards anyone could be called on to answer questions. Teachers should also ask students for explanations because from my own personal experience I have just guessed on some "yes or no" questions. Explanations would make students use their critical thinking skills which could be apart of the course goals. I believe this information about asking questions would help future and current educators become effective teachers.

Blog Post Assignment #3

Peer Editing is working with someone in your class or your own age to help improve their writing. According to the Peer Editing video on YouTube, the best way to approach peer editing is to have a positive attitude and I agree. I believe that peer editing would be more comfortable for the person whose writing is being edited, if the editor is nice about it.The Peer Edit with Perfection Tutorial slide show gives a lot of good ideas that editors should use. Editors should start off by giving compliments, stating what they like about the writing and what the writer did well. After giving compliments, the editor should then make suggestions on how their peer could improve their writing. The editor should also be very specific during the suggestion process. Lastly, the editor should make corrections on punctuation, grammar, sentence, and spelling mistakes.

Peer Editing
In EDM 310, I will use the suggestions stated in the Peer Editing video and the Peer Edit with Perfection Tutorial slide show when editing my classmates blog posts. I will give compliments, make suggestions, and also make corrections on their writing. Most importantly, throughout the entire process I will keep a positive attitude and think about how I would want to be treated during the peer editing process. The importance of peer editing is so that writing will be improved. I believe with using these steps writing will be improved tremendously.
